Do you think there ever could be a better software giant than Microsoft?

Do you think there ever could be, maybe not now but perhaps in 10-20 yars time, a better software company than Microsoft, or a better Internet-Search company than Google who creates a better operating system than Windows or a better Search Engine than Google, or better productivity suites, internet sevices,IM etc? Do you think it could be possible for a new company to be dominant by taking out the dominant companies out there now?

Of course. I bet back in the day the people of the Roman Empire used to turn to each other and say things like "There will never be an Empire as big as ours. We will always dominate".

I think there are already "better" software companies than Microsoft. A lot of them. Microsoft are not the best. Not by a long way. They may be the biggest (And not by a lot, Oracle are getting close) but as for best. That must be a joke right?

    It depends on how you define "better". So long as you don’t measure "best" as "most commonly used" then there are already companies that have made better operating systems, productivity suites, Internet services and IM services then Microsoft. Google are still ahead of the game when it comes to search, but their rivals are catching up.

    the problem is that microsoft has positioned in the market since long time ago. There are much better software providers, but microsoft si so big and so in the market that is really difficult to compete.

    Hello;

    – Gazing into the Hewlett Packard crystal ball I keep next to my Lexmark printer —

    I am a big fan of Linux (Ubuntu version). In a way Microsoft might already be having problems. People in this country are not as enamoured with Microsoft as they used to be … you see more Macs (especially laptops) than ever. Users are saying (privately) "Why the new operating system?" and (angrily) "What is with the new design of Microsoft Office 2007?"

    That is in the United States, in other (European) countries Linux is catching up! In China, where there are more internet users than anywhere else, Linux is making headway (Red Flag distro). I have been predicting the rise of Linux as a dominant operating system for years (I am not sure I still believe it though).

    If you are talking price and functionality Linux might already be the "better" operating system (it is hard to beat the price). It might take a while for it to be more popular. The Sun Microsystem’s Open Office Suite is in some ways superior to Microsoft’s Office Suite — again free is good.

    As to Google, I hear so little negative criticism of it, I suspect it will be around a long time.

    There is no real way to know what will be the great computer systems and softwares in 20 years … India is computer programming superpower, China has more users, there are initiatives to introduce computing to third world countries. The whole system is unstable — I think you really have to focus on the present.

    Best of luck,

    Bill
