how good is software support for the iphone?

i have a BB 8100 which is nice but ive been having problems with it and im looking into getting a new phone- possibly an iphone. what i want to know is how much software is available for it? am i going to be spending lots of $$$ trying to get good programs or is there tons of freeware and cool stuff?
dont really need any productivity software except for a digital checkbook register.

Once jailbroken, the possibilities of third party apps are endless. I love the iphone’s apps.. a lot cooler than the sidekick’s in my opinion plus they are free too. Apple is going to release their own apps that only AT&T customers may purchase (for now) but as of yet, that hasnt been released. In my opinion, the iphone is a really good phone, glad i finally gave in to all the hype. =)

edit: There are MANY programs that will help make life easier, yes, even a checkbook. ;-)
